Muwasala: Dar al-Mustafa and the revitalizing of historical links between Arabia and Southeast Asia

For centuries, the Indian Ocean has sustained Islamic scholarship between Arabia and Southeast Asia. Scholarly networks irrigated regions which birthed numerous ‘verandas of Mecca’. The mid-1990s saw the rebirth in Tarim of another node – Habib Umar bin Hafiz’s Dar al-Mustafa – surpassing others in reach. Today, the seminary counts amongst its students a majority from Southeast Asia but also growing numbers from Western Europe, America and Australia. Habib Umar will for the first time be speaking on the history of Dar al-Mustafa and how it has flourished, focusing on its role in re-energizing links with Southeast Asia.
