Two threats and an opportunity: what does disorder in the Middle East mean for East Asia?

Abstract

In his address Anthony Bubalo will examine what the rise of Islamic State means for East Asia and whether the threat posed by foreign fighters in Southeast Asia in particular is real or exaggerated. He will explore what impact repression of the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt might have on Islamist movements in Southeast Asia. And he will examine how the changing political economy of relations between the Middle East and East Asia is creating a new opportunity for a deeper and more substantive relationship between the two ends of the Asian continent
