THE ARAB HISTORICAL MEMORY & Muhammad’s Prophetic Consciousness

ABSTRACT

As a sociological exploration, Prof Hassan argues that Muhammad’s prophetic consciousness was shaped by his personal, social, cultural and religious milieus. He examines the role of various factors in shaping Muhammad’s prophetic consciousness, in particular the role of intellectual mentoring, religious-ethical values and family connections of his first wife Khadija bint Khuwaylid. Prof Hassan also explores the nature of revelation as a sociological phenomenon and discusses Surah (chapter) 93 of the Quran as a concrete expression of Muhammad’s prophetic consciousness and the exegetical controversies surrounding this Surah and its contents among Muslim scholars.
