Quo Vadis Turkey? Contemporary and Future Outlook of Turkey as a Major Regional Player in the Middle East
Abstract
Turkey’s foreign and security policies on the Middle East has undergone a very difficult period after the beginning of the Arab spring. Turkey’s Middle East policies are also criticized after ISIS emerged and Turkey’s fight both against ISIS and PKK terrorism became more and more important now in the context of Syrian civil war. Both USA and Russia now are the biggest players and Turkey as a regional player is facing multifaceted challenges. Turkey’s AKP government policies will be critically analysed and Turkey’s policies and the Middle East developments will be evaluated and future political forecasting will be provided.
About the Speakers
Hüseyin Bağcı is a Professor of International Relations at Middle East Technical Universtiy in Ankara and the Chair of the department since October 2011. In 1988, he received his Ph. D. in Political Science from the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-University in Bonn. He was guest researcher at the German Society for Foreign Affairs (DGAP) in Bonn, and Senior Fellow at the Center for European Integration Studies (ZEI) in Bonn and at the Landesverteidigungsakademie und Militarwissenshaftliches Büro des Bundesministeriums für Landesverteidigung in Vienna. He has published several books and large number of articles on Turkish Foreign Policy and Turkish-German relations. Prof. Bağcı is a famous TV and Radio Commentator in Turkey. Prof. Bağcı is a member of IISS in London and Center for European Policy Studies (CEPS), Brussels, Belgium. He is also Deputy Director of Foreign Policy Institute in Ankara. Prof. Bağcı has been visiting Professor at the University of Bonn as (Anna Maria Schimmel Professor) 2007, University of Rome “La Sapienza”, 2007 (Italy) and University of Lublin, 2008, (Poland) and 2010-2011 Humboldt university Berlin (Germany). Prof. Bağcı is widely quoted also by national and international press.
