PART 1: ‘TALIBAN’ OR ‘US’? A GROUND NARRATIVE FROM AFGHANISTAN. PART 2: AN UNEQUAL HUMANITY IS HERE

Abstract

Dr. Wee will share what the international ‘war against terrorism’ looks like on the ground in Afghanistan and brainstorm how every human being, including ordinary Singaporean citizens, can participate responsibly in building a more equal and peaceful world.

About the Speakers
Dr. Wee Teck Young

After Dr Wee, or Dr Hakim as he is known to his friends in Afghanistan, completed his Masters in Family Medicine in Singapore, he left a private medical practice to begin a journey of un-learning what formal ‘education’ had taught him

While he was practicing medicine in Singapore, he volunteered with drug-rehabilitation groups and helped to set up Tetraplegia Workgroup Singapore, a support group for those paralyzed in their four limbs.

His work and life among Afghans, first at the Pakistan border and now in Afghanistan, made him a ‘broken’ human being. He felt compelled to re-examine why he would live at all.

As youth everywhere are taking to the streets to change the inequalities and violence of global governance, Dr Hakim is walking with Afghans and other peace activists in creative actions of non-violence. He asks, ‘Y not? Our rigorous practice of love and truth may change everything.’
