CRITICAL ISLAM AS COUNTER-FUNDAMENTALISM: THE CASE OF MUSLIM SOUTHEAST ASIA (BY INVITATION/REGISTRATION)

To commemorate the September 11 tragedy of 2001, the Middle East Institute-NUS, Select Books and Leftwrite Centre featured three Muslim intellectuals who argued for a new way of countering Islamic radicalism beyond surveillance, detention and rehabilitation. To our panelists, fundamentalist interpretations of the religion would be potently challenged if Muslims go deeper into Islamic history and unearth the religion’s critical tradition. Developments in Muslim Southeast Asia, they argue, place the region in an apt role to champion this long-haul strategy.
