[Arabia Asia] India’s Pivot to the Gulf under Modi

Abstract
Since Narendra Modi came to power, there has been a noticeable shift in India’s approach towards the Middle East, especially in the Persian Gulf region. India has engaged the key countries of the Gulf and has sought them as partners in its economic and developmental agenda. This coincides with its great power aspirations and could be a game changer in its political and diplomatic fortunes- if Delhi can walk the talk and live up to the rising expectations in the country and beyond for future Indo-Gulf ties.

Professor P R Kumaraswamy teaches contemporary Middle East in Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi and is the author of India’s Israel Policy (Columbia University Press, 2010) and Squaring the Circle: Mahatma Gandhi and the Jewish National Home (New Delhi, ICWA and KW, 2018). He is the Series Editor of Persian Gulf: India and the Region published by Palgrave Macmillan. He is also the Honorary Director of Middle East Institute, New Delhi (www.mei.org.in).
