About SOUFRA
Award-winning director, Thomas Morgan follows the unlikely and wildly inspirational story of intrepid social entrepreneur, Mariam Shaar – a generational refugee who has spent her entire life in the 65-year-old Burl El Barajneh refugee camp just south of Beirut, Lebanon. The film follows Mariam as she sets out against all odds to change her fate by launching a successful catering company, “Soufra,” and then expand it into a food truck business with a diverse team of fellow refugee women who now share this camp as their home.

Highlights: Letters to Beirut
For the first time ever, we are connecting two unlikely communities in the most human of ways. The audience in Singapore will be given the opportunity to write their messages on a GIGI Blok- cardboard building blocks. More than 1000 of these blocks will be hand-delivered to the Children’s Centre in Beirut for them to share in the same experience. Our team will also be collecting a video response from the camp!

Highlights: Social Enterprise Market (1 September)
As we honour Mariam’s incredible story of resilience and the spirit of the women in the camp, we also celebrate the power of social enterprise and community. Before the premiere, there will be a market showcasing our local social enterprises and community partners who are also doing their part for humanity. Each booth will be built using GIGI Bloks as well!
