WARS & SANCTIONS IN THE MIDDLE EAST: WHAT’S IN IT FOR ASIA?

ABSTRACT:

This workshop takes a trans-regional approach to explore various aspects of the current affairs in the Middle East North Africa (MENA) region on Asia. Intra-regional links have been reinforced, mainly due to the increase of bilateral trade and economic collaboration. Inevitably, the events in each region will have spillover effects on each other. The workshop will assess the impact of the most significant uprisings of the region over the past few years, on the Gulf region and explores the effects of the recent events on the GCC relationship with Asia (from both economic and political point of view). As current events unfold in the MENA region, the security threats have remained high and the war talks have continued. The workshop will give an assessment of the security situation in the MENA region and the political, economic and social consequences this holds for Asia.
