THE HOSTAGE CRISIS AND BEYOND: Islamists In Algeria

Abstract

Last month’s hostage crisis at the In Amenas gas plant in Algeria, in which al-Qaʿida-linked Islamists took over 800 people hostage and in which 39 foreigners and 29 militants were killed, shocked the local, regional, and international communities. Dr. Robert Parks, who is based in Algeria and heads the Centre d’Études Maghrébines enAlgérie, will discuss the crisis and provide background on the Algerian regime’s struggles with Islamist militant groups going back to 1991.

Dr Robert P. Parks Founding Director Center for Maghrib Studies in Algeria (CEMA)

Robert P. Parks is the Director of the Center for Maghrib Studies in Algeria. He received his Ph.D. in political science in May 2011, which was based on several years of qualitative research in Algeria and Tunisia. His research has been published in The Middle East Journal, The Arab Reform Bulletin, and he contributed to The Politics of Islamic Finance (2004). He is co-editor of a forthcoming volume on local-national relations in the Maghreb and is currently writing book on state building processes in Algeria and Tunisia, examined from the bottom-up.
