Abstract:

Egypt’s transition to democracy has been anything but smooth. Two years after people power brought down the final Egyptian dictator, Hosni Mubarak, the world yet again witnesses an astonishing development in Egypt on 3 July 2013 when General Abdul Fatah Al-Sisi removed President Mohamed Morsi and suspended the Egyptian constitution. Al-Sisi then declared Adly Mansour as the interim president of Egypt, Morsi was put under house arrest and Muslim Brotherhood leaders were arrested. The announcement was followed by demonstrations and clashes between supporters and opponents of the coup throughout Egypt. As Egypt’s legal experts begin work on amending the constitution, MEI invited four experts to share with us their insights on how the situation will unfold for Egypt.
