North Korea could become world’s cheapest factory

Last Thursday, Al Jazeera reported on the USA-North Korea Summit in Singapore ahead of the meeting scheduled to begin on 12th June. The programme consisted of an interview with our Senior Research Fellow Mattia Tomba exploring North Korea’s economic role and potential if it is reintegrated into the global market.

During the interview, he gave his comments on why North Korea could become the cheapest place to build factories if it is reintegrated into the global market.

“There is no other place in the world like North Korea, so by definition, will be the cheapest place. Salaries will be extremely low. So there will be an interest, mainly from the Chinese to produce goods there.”
