MEI Political Economy Cluster Conference: Philanthropy or Empire-Building: Charity Networks between Middle East and Southeast Asia

This one-day workshop explores the dynamics underpinning transnational charity networks operating between the Middle East and Southeast Asia. The ramifications of these interactions have had an impact in social, political, religious and economic terms. How have charity networks between the Middle East and Southeast Asia impacted conceptions of Islamic orthodoxies and Muslim identities? How have Southeast Asian communities reconciled the contradictions between Middle Eastern variants of Islamic orthodoxy with local Islamic traditions? Have charity networks influenced political developments in the region? What is the impact of transnational charities on transnational Muslim identities? These are some of the questions that will be addressed in this one-day workshop. A draft program containing the list of speakers and their paper titles can be accessed HERE.
